rule #1: driver picks the music

a friend correctly noted that anytime i’m behind the wheel (i’ve been doing a lot of this lately) the only bands that you’ll hear in the car are (in no particular order, but definitely exclusively and on constant rotation)

gayngs

twin sister

george harrison

buke and gass

suicide

bill callahan

nirvana

yes sir. that’s really all i listen to right there. perhaps it is time to add more to the rotation, eh?

“It is the continual rush of time, so violent that it appears to be screaming, that deprives our actual lives of so much dignity and meaning.” —Tennessee Williams

“

It is possible that things will not get better
than they are now, or have been known to be.
It is possible that we are past the middle now.
It is possible that we have crossed the great water
without knowing it, and stand now on the other side.
Yes: I think that we have crossed it. Now
we are being given tickets, and they are not
tickets to the show we had been thinking of,
but to a different show, clearly inferior.

Check again: it is our own name on the envelope.
The tickets are to that other show.

It is possible that we will walk out of the darkened hall
without waiting for the last act: people do.
Some people do. But it is probable
that we will stay seated in our narrow seats
all through the tedious dénouement
to the unsurprising end – riveted, as it were;
spellbound by our own imperfect lives
because they are lives,
and because they are ours.

“Described as a ‘dramatic thriller’ ‘Pitchfork’ revolves around ‘the middle-aged mother of an indie rocker who, after her son is killed in a car accident, seeks vengeance on an online blogger who had peddled snark about him. Things take a turn, though, when she finds out the snarker is just a teenager.’ And in case you were wondering, the title is no coincidence as the blogger writes for the titular hipster music site.” —“Duplass Brothers and Jonah Hill Look to Reteam on Indie Rock Thriller ‘Pitchfork’” (via)

“On the [Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno] tour, one of the dancers gave me a DVD of an R. Kelly show that had been shot in Oakland, and I watched it and thought, “Oh, my god.” Insane stuff, just insane: a six-minute monologue about girls moaning [laughs] and then he did Trapped in the Closet with almost all the different voices. I thought, “Wow, here’s where some of the most innovative musical staging is happening— it’s not happening in the rock world.” But, as much as I love the whole Trapped in the Closet thing, I didn’t feel confident to go that way.” —David Byrne explains what you’ve forgotten: Trapped in the Closet is still one of the top ten best things to ever happen.
